Cushing's syndrome is a
hormonal disorder caused by prolonged exposure of the body's tissues to
high levels of the hormone cortisol. Sometimes called "hypercortisolism,"
it is relatively rare and most commonly affects adults aged 20 to 50. An
estimated 10 to 15 of every million people are affected each year.

CUSHING’S SYNDROME AWARENESS
DAY
WHEREAS:
Cushing's syndrome is caused by the excess production of the steroid
hormone Cortisol. These relatively rare disorders can be physically and
emotionally devastating to the patient; and
WHEREAS:
Most patients endure years of symptoms prior to obtaining a diagnosis,
and recovery often requires a substantial period of time. Cushing's syndrome may
cause weight gain, skin changes and fatigue, and it can lead to such serious
conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and osteoporosis. If
untreated, Cushing's syndrome can cause death; and
WHEREAS:
Cushing's is a medical disorder where patients can benefit from expert
medical care and information. It is also vital to put patients in contact with
other patients and to facilitate the sharing of information between those
suffering from Cushing’s. Many
individuals and organizations across the country strive to assist in this
process and to increase public awareness for this serious disease; and
WHEREAS:
A collective effort from patients, experts and families is critical to
help increase awareness and educate the public about Cushing's syndrome. These
stakeholders are the central resource for information and support, helping to
raise and distribute funds and spread the message about Cushing's syndrome
research; now
THEREFORE:
I, SONNY PERDUE, Governor of the State of
Georgia
, do hereby proclaim April 8, 2008, as CUSHING’S SYNDROME AWARENESS DAY in
Georgia
.
In
