The first line from the lyrics of “Biloxi”,
a Jesse Winchester song recorded by Jimmy Buffett, inspired the name of
our Towns Around Biloxi Parrot Head Club. Lines from that song also
adorn the signs surrounding the soon to be built Margaritaville Casino
in Biloxi, Mississippi. Located between New Orleans, LA, and Mobile, AL,
we’re in the midst of the stomping grounds of Mr. Buffett’s youth.
We even have the house that his crazy uncle built in a town where some
of our members reside, and more than one cousin in our club’s “zip
code” radius.
“Partying with a Purpose” is a
mainstay of our club. We help to support a local food pantry, “The
Lord Is My Help”, with food donations. Food for people and for the
local animal shelters was an original cause of our club, which was
founded in April 1999 by a small but dedicated group of sailors from the
Naval Station in Pascagoula, MS. We’ve recently re-instituted the food
drive at every meeting in response to our current economy and an
increased need. We also do our part to support the effort involving
Alzheimer’s by donating funds to the Alzheimer’s Foundation Of The
South, Mississippi Division, and to do the same for cancer through
support of the American Cancer Society.
We’re
one of the founding host clubs for “Stars Fell On Alabama” … which
began 10 years ago when one of our founding members got together with
members of the other host clubs, and said something along the lines
of “Hey, wouldn’t it be great if we could share these places,
this music, and this PHun with other Parrot Heads?”
Then there’s “Six String
Music”, an invitational event that focuses on trop rock singers and
songwriters, and their original music.
It's a true showcase for the amazing talent that’s out there in
the world of “beach music”. We
do our best to help the New Orleans PHC and the Loyal Order of Disorder
Baton Rouge PHC and work with the Tropical Isle and Margaritaville New
Orleans to bring together “a magical, musical weekend in the ‘Big
Easy’!” ... August hot music!
At present, our club is
proud to have just over 110 members from towns scattered along our
coastline. We do our best to meet every other Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
island time, with live music immediately following a half hour business
meeting and club activities update, host venues permitting. Hurricanes
happen, and we're still doing our best to "reason with the
season" and its effects on places where we've met in the past and
hope to meet in the future. Meeting information is posted on our club's
web site at tabphc.com,
and published in the Biloxi newspaper.
The Mississippi Gulf
Coast is one of the most amazing places to live as a member of the
Parrot Head Nation. “Stars can see Biloxi … Stars can find their
faces in the sea”. Come on down around Biloxi, and see what we’re
all about …
